We are a diverse community of Jesus followers based in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa who strive to be Christ-centered, family-focused and mission-minded. This podcast is a collection of lessons and workshops that have been given by a number of local and international speakers.
How do we handle cultural differences that threaten unity in the church? How do we put Christ first even as we embrace our cultural identity? How important is diversity in our communal witness to Jesus?
This lesson answers these and other questions related to being united in diversity as an essential part of our bearing the image of God.
At Pentecost, each person miraculously heard the Gospel preached in their own language, reversing the curse of Babel when God confused the language of the people to make them scatter over all the earth in line with His covenant with Adam and Noah.
The first Christians were also scattered as a result of persecution, with some settling in Antioch. Antioch was a very diverse city in which people stuck to their ethnic group. Yet the church grew rapidly as people from many different ethnic groups accepted the Gospel, becoming a unique community very different to all the other people groups in the city.
The church in Antioch provides many lessons for modern day churches which take seriously God’s purpose for us to reflect and embrace the “gathering of the nations”. These lessons are covered in the rest of the sermon.
